So I've been looking around over there. You can't assign different user pictures to different posts or replies?! :(

doesn't look like it. I think you can upload just about as many different userpics as you want, but you can only choose one at a time as your default pic for everything.

seems to be, although as far as I can tell the comments themselves will end up segregated depending on where they are made.

Hmmm.

So, do you have an opinion on what to use to download/back up my 8 years of LJ (for PC)?

well, I did it the geeky way by downloading .csv files of each month from the Export Journal page and importing them into a spreadsheet program. it took me about three hours total to get 7 years of journaling. I copied and pasted each month into a year-long text file and imported that into FileMaker Pro, one for each year. It is helpful to check "Header" for January of each year and then uncheck it for each of the following months, so you only end up with one header record at the beginning of the file to use to label the rest with.

If that doesn't make any sense to you, nevermind and use one of the following:

get your journal as a .pdf file(s) at LJBook (currently under heavy load. surprise!)

or you can download LJArchive for Windows, which does whatever it does. lots of people seem to like it. not being a windoze dude, I haven't used it.
