The questionnaire. It's been seen in a million places so I can't really say I got it from any particular place.

What did you do in 2009 that you’d never done before?
Seriously considered myself disabled enough to apply for government support.

Did you keep your New Years’ resolutions?
I don't generally make resolutions. I prefer year-round life maintenance as required.

Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not quite: Miles was born towards the end of 2008.

Did anyone close to you die?
Oddly, no. It's starting to happen, though.

What countries/states did you visit?
The republics of Seattle, Berkeley, and San Francisco. Occasionally I ventured down to San Bruno to go to the mall conveniently located next to the BART station.

What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
Enough money to meet my living expenses.

What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory?
Um. Um. I am bad with dates, but I will always remember seeing the crowds at Obama's inauguration and watching the shrub get onto the airplane to fly him far, far away from the White House, where he should have stayed to begin with.

What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Finding someone willing to publish my first book.

What was your biggest failure?
I try not to give those any more space in my head than they already take up.

Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing to write home about. Or to the internet.

What was the best thing you bought?
Shaving oil. I'm not kidding. It is so much better than shaving cream.

Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The California legislature and the Governator, who are happily presiding over the collapse of a once-great state.

Where did most of your money go?
Food, therapy, food, rent, food. Meds.

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Camping out on Angel Island in March.

What song/album will always remind you of 2009?
Which one? Pff. I suppose Lady Gaga will probably be my most startling musical discovery, although I am very very late to the party.

Compared to this time last year, are you:
1. happier or sadder? Sadder
2. thinner or fatter? A little thinner but mostly the same.
3. richer or poorer? Poorer.

What do you wish you’d done more of?
Backpacking

What do you wish you’d done less of?
Worrying-panicking-freaking out. It's a process that takes hours and has disposed of more days than I have to spare.

How did you spend Christmas?
Read all night xxxxxxmas eve; slept all day xxxxxxxmas day.

How did you spend New Year's?
New Year's Eve: at home listening to people whooping and setting off explosives until the wee hours. New Year's day I slept.

Who did you spend the most time on the phone with?
Hahahahahahaha

Did you fall in love in 2009?
No. Nope. Nuh-uh.

How many one night stands in this last year?
Hahahahahahaha

What was your favorite TV show?
I'm still trying to catch up on Battlestar Galactica but I don't actually watch TV on the TV.

Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I'm rather less fond of our Governor.

What did you want and get?
A book accepted for publishing.

What did you want and not get?
Change I could believe in.

What were your favorite films of this year?
I'm not sure I watched any films this year. I should keep a film diary because I like them when I see them but I forget them almost immediately. OH! I saw Adam in the theater when it opened. It was ok if fluffy. The lived-happily-ever-after-upon-moving-3000-miles-away-from-everything-he'd-ever-known ending was a little hard to swallow.

What did you do on your birthday, and how old did you turn?
I did nothing but what I wanted to do, but I don't remember what that was. I may have read or surfed the internet all day. I was 47. On Sunday I'll be 48 and will similarly do nothing I don't want to do. No one else might celebrate my birthday, but I do, dammit!

What political issue stirred you the most?
The inability of the Democrats to know what to do when they are in power.

Who did you miss?
That's "whom" and I missed various people at various times.

Who was the best new person(s) you met?
I'm not going to choose among new internet friends; I don't think I met anyone new in face-to-face life.

Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009.
Freedom is difficult to hew out for oneself and not the common currency many seem to believe that it is. Not that I didn't know this before. I was relatively insulated from it in school, though.

hi, erik, hi! the eagle has landed!

>What did you want and not get?
Change I could believe in.

oh, yeah. well... lewis black said in an interview i saw online that it's like a paralyzed patient. if the patient can begin to wiggle one toe, it's progress. i'm trying to adopt his attitude, but it's hard, when what i thought we were getting was a patient who'd get up & dance.

you're back in business internet wise?? thank the gods!

i thought we were getting was a patient who'd get up & dance.

you and me both; I wasn't expecting a patient in need of rehab at all, except to the degree that it represents the country as a whole. I do understand that Obama needs the people to continue to make noise, to stare down the autocrats and millionaires who have the country by the throat and show them we know where the guillotines are, but I was expecting leadership of some kind. I mean, we have the reins! why do we keep passing them over?

I kind of know why, actually, but I still want to believe that there is a way to show money that it does not get to dictate everything.

sigh.

yes, i'm sitting in my very own living room, typing on my laptop. 96 hours without made me appreciate this more. *g*

yes, i agree about the absence of leadership. did he really think being friendly to the right would make them want to cooperate? well, maybe he did, though i'd have thought chicago politics would've toughened him up a bit more than that. i'm trying to walk a line between disillusionment and a willingness to give him more time.

well, he is a smart man. maybe he'll learn quickly that the right will only take, and never give. I am hoping time will help, but we have to think of midterm elections. he's not the only one fucking up but he could use his position to stir our snoozing congress people out of their stupor.

maybe I should write some letters. I have nothing else to do (ha).
