all over but the snoring

so I spent my birthday having crepes, shopping at old navy and the buffalo exchange, and then coming home and listening to/downloading old videos. it started with a bunch of psychedelic furs videos and then I had to see public image do public image as it is perhaps the first video that caught my eyes and ears in the 688 club in atlanta whose logo looked suspiciously like PiL's logo but back then it was secret code for punk rock and only a few people in the city were going every friday and saturday night like I was. and then I had to find laurie anderson's original o superman video and well this just turned into a nostalgia fest where I kept typing in band names and being met with various memories.

I still wish I could find a copy of that film with limbo district in it. if anyone anywhere has any idea what I am talking about and can point me to one I'd be eternally grateful.

it is now late and I have turned the volume down. I did not find videos for songs from the cure's pornography or from faith. I don't know if they exist actually. I forgot to look for OMD videos but I think I have to go to bed now and continue the loafing tomorrow. because I am old and time goes by to quickly and because I have been sleeping late, from now on my birthday lasts two days instead of just one.

I just noticed that my menubar clock has disappeared. I think I should restart my machine.

I can't believe they came out with the iphone a mere six months after I bought a video ipod. I wonder if I will ever be able to afford one of these things. I will of course have to have one, eventually.

I need a benefactor. anyone see anyone looking to fund a starving artist sort of intellectual type please direct them to my journal.

thank you and goodnight

thanks.

yeah I'm sure that being poor is actually a good thing--by the time we can afford the gadget the bugs will have been worked out and the price will have dropped. this is one way to console oneself for being technologically deprived.

glad you had the crepes! a nostalgia-fest sounds perfect.

a line is coming to me from the ether -- anger is an energy. john lydon with red hair, acting menacing and wacked-out. he amused me, which may have been the wrong response.

OMD i remember vaguely, but a google search turned up nothing i actually recognized. i'm so ashamed. blue nile i remember, spandau ballet, etc. etc.

may the road rise with you!

I'm pretty sure the "anger is an energy" line came from the sex pistols days, but yeah john lydon has for the most part been amusing when not simply annoying. he seemed to think that his opinion was the only one worth having but interestingly no one pays attention to him anymore.

orchestral manoeuvres in the dark (they managed to get almost every vowel in that second word) did 'enola gay' which was probably their closest thing to a hit before 'so in love' which came after they went all floofy and I stopped buying them. now I will listen to that period just for kicks but the old stuff is still their best. look up 'romance of the telescope' to see what sort of moodiness they are capable of. "Dazzle Ships" may have been their best album.

in any case I discovered them around the same time as public image and joy division and together with the psychedelic furs and echo and the bunnymen they formed the soundtrack to my troubled late adolescence (which might not be over yet. I'm not sure).

Happy birthday, and may your arts find the patronage they deserve, through individual or the world's generosity.

Limbo District
Hey erik

I played guitar in Limbo District and found a couple of links to where you might get a copy of the movie. It was called,"Carnival", and was filmed by James Herbert. Jim is a UGA Art Professor and accomplished independent film maker and music video director (REM & B52 music videos).

Try these as a jump off site and mind the "word-wrap":

http://www.djangomusic.com/item_movie.asp?id=V++++17230&dt=&cid=&sid=

http://www.thekitchen.org/MovieCatalog/Titles/Figures.html

Some sites list "Carnival" and "Limbo District" as 2 separate movies. That is wrong. Good luck.

Re: Limbo District
don't know if you'll see this but wow I'd be interested to know how you happened on my post so quickly unless you are really an lj user hiding behind the anonymous comment but even so quite a bit of luck or fate or something. I was mesmerized by you all along about 1982-83 when I first escaped marietta and started hanging out at the clubs in atlanta and was very unhappy when the band stopped playing.

I'll see if django comes up with a copy of figures but I can't afford $300 to the kitchen for a film, not even one I've been looking for for 20 years. I'm a starving artist/phd student myself and firmly believe that some philanthropic and/or government interest should be making this sort of work available to the general public and paying the artists themselves handsomely. but I'm a big commie living the life of san francisco values.

thanks for the tips. and the memories.
