I want y'all to answer this one!

daddysambiguity and lilphatts had this chain meme so I'm going to go fishing for small talk:

Let's start the new year off right; The problem with LJ: we all think we are so close, but really, we know nothing about each other. So I want you to ask me something you think you should know about me. Something that should be obvious, but you have no idea about. Ask away.

Then post this in your LJ and find out what people don't know about you!

I'm even making this public so anyone at all can ask embarrassing questions.

I am 5'8" and slowly shrinking. I used to be 5'9". yeah it's already started. I don't know whether to take calcium or sit up straight or get my scoliosis treated more aggressively..

my first words were to the family cat: "Hi there, kitty!" my parents were concerned about me because I wasn't talking at all and it was past time to be saying "mama" and "dada" and "byebye" etc when one day I just blurted a fully-formed sentence at Leo the cat. but so yes. always.

it was so scary to give myself shots that I couldn't do it sometimes and would have to get a friend to stab me. finally I taught myself a method that did not require that I "dart" myself. much easier now.

honestly I can't remember any particular thing that made me laugh yesterday. I'm fairly certain I laughed at Santiago somewhere along the line, though.

"hi there, kitty" are lovely first words! i'm sure leo was pleased.

yeah the last time I got my height measured the nurse said 5'8" and I was like what?? no that can't be right!! then I thought to myself--ten years past 35. I guess it's possible. :/ indeed.

Santiago is a clown. he performs ridiculous stunts and then looks over to see if you are watching. freakshow. that's his nickname.

Yikes, that is scary about height. For whatever reason I am the same height I've always been, 5'8 1/2" in bare feet. I slouch a lot, but try and stand up straight for that measuring tape. Hopefully, continuing to workout will help. Maybe you had overestimated your height before? It seems strange to lose that much before say, 70 or 80.

That is awesome and funny that you said your first words to a cat!

BTW - are you doing anything for your birthday?

Oh, let me ask a real question!

Who are your top three favorite poets? (I know it may be hard to choose) and also who are your favorite fiction writers?

Do you like JG Ballard and science fiction?

oh the three favorite poets are easy. it's the next three that might be more difficult:

Gertrude Stein
Paul Celan
Lyn Hejinian--I really do like her stuff. it's not just because she's such a wonderful person.

fiction. hm.

Samuel Beckett
Robert Walser
Cormac McCarthy--but only one book, really. maybe I'd better choose someone whose general oeuvre I like. um.

Toni Morrison.
wait.
Carson McCullers.

oh let's let that be a three-way tie.

I do like science fiction although I haven't read JG Ballard. relatively lately I've read Neal Stephenson, William Gibson, CJ Cherryh.. when I was younger I went through a major sci-fi phase where I read everything by Asimov, Clarke, Bradbury, and some lesser lights whose names escape me now. oh, Dune, of course. of them all I think I liked Childhood's End and the Foundation trilogy the best.

well I don't know if I ever quite reached 5'9" but I know I was once measured at 5'8.75" so I always said "five-nine" when asked. so who knows how much I've really lost. I also don't know what the scoliosis is doing to my height although it doesn't usually change much once you are finished growing. on the other hand my back feels much more bunched up on the right side than it did when I was younger. on the other other hand, T might be responsible for crowding more muscle in there.

so. who knows. I've thought about gravity boots. surely there's an old pair from the 80s somewhere for sale.

I have no plans for my birthday other than not to work. I'd be open to an informal ad-hoc get-together of whomever we could scrape up but it's a bit late to make a grand deal of of it, I think.

Okay, here's my question: After knowing you (99% from afar) for 10 years, what don't I know about you that I should?

now see that's copping out. :P you want me to tell you what to ask me?
hm.

I constantly feel guilty that I might not be taking good enough care of my cats.

I don't know if you should know that, but now you do.

How did you decide on a name? What is your middle name?
eriktrips
Jan. 9th, 2008 01:46 am (UTC)
my middle name is Martin, after my great grandfather on my paternal grandfather's side.

Erik Martin was the name my parents had chosen for "if I'd been a boy," so when I turned out actually to be one, I decided to keep the name since I'd known about it for many years and had more or less been living as Erik as my alter ego for a very long time.
