a geek has a birthday..

I arrived home this evening to find a mysterious package on the table with a card "to Erik"; under the card and on top of the squarish object in a plain wrapper was a pack of AAA batteries.

what's flat and takes AAA batteries?

The video is unclear, so in braille:

Sandy got me a tshirt that detects presence and strength of wireless 802.11 signals. This is me being a big dork showing it off.

If I wear it to our next QA meeting I wonder will I be asked to leave.

the best part (after the lighting up part) is when you smile.

The smile is really great -- ah cute, and I don't mean that in a flirty way ya know... : 0

But, really -- I am glad she got you this cool shirt. Happy Birthday Buddy! Totally cool!

Do you have plans for your birthday evening? We can hang out? email --

it really does! I walked around the house with it on and the further I got from my wireless router the fewer the blue signal bars stayed lit. I think though I have to wear it walking down Valencia street to get the full effect: see how far all the wireless cafes' signals bleed.

I'm not certain I'd really want to do that though. I mean SF is a geeky town but we do try to put a sheen of cool over it.

thanks! the batteries go in a little box in a pocket at the hem of the shirt--you can take the box out and put it in your pocket while you are actually wearing the shirt.

it's a little rainy today, so I don't think I get to make a fool of myself till tomorrow. I really do want to see what it does up and down Valencia though. maybe I'll take my camera and make three-minute films of myself and my shirt as I walk along.

might as well make it a total spectacle.

I seriously have to work up the nerve to do so. of course it's a bit chilly to be wearing just a tshirt, but I guess I could put a thermal shirt under it.

oh and pants. mustn't forget pants.
