success!!

i didn't expect to hear about this on a sunday but look here:

Dear Erik,

I am happy to be the messenger of good news: you have passed your written exams. Congratulations. Maxine will contact you and your committee with the day and time of your oral exam.

In general, your committee was quite impressed with your performance. In particular, there was much interest in the promising work you are doing with McCarthy and Stein (somewhat less developed in this essay) and your "personal thinking" on metonymy.Ê

I would encourage you to speak with your committee members in preparation for the exam. They will be able to give you a good sense of what they are looking for in this next stage.

I too would be happy to speak with you. I am away until Thursday but can speak by phone or upon my return.

Again, congratulations.

of course the bad news is that my orals are now officially happening and i have to somehow move myself out of denial and into studying.

tomorrow.

woohoo!
