I love the sound her wings make when she zooms around.

have you ever seen/heard hummingbirds dive-bombing--intruders, I guess, or just for fun or whatever it is they do it for? they start way up high and come buzzing down as fast as they can; they actually sound like tiny little airplanes whistling to earth.

we have lots of them out here. I don't know about your neck of the woods.

I lived in a bird refuge over the summer and got dive-bombed by all sorts of things, but never a hummingbird. I have gotten to hold a lot of them in my hands, though. I grew up in British Columbia and my parents had a solarium which birds would sometimes fly into and not be able to find their way out, so we'd catch them and take them outside. Some birds would be struggling to get out of our hands the whole time, but the hummingbirds would often stay for several minutes and sometimes wouldn't fly away until we tossed them into the air.

how cool! I've never held a hummingbird in my hands, but I have looked them straight in the eye. over at the arboretum here there is a particular spot where they hang out, and you can stand basically in the middle of them as they fly all around you. it's really neat when they hover there a few inches from your face, like, "hi. you're big and kind of in the way."

I have had chickadees and juncos eating out of my hand in Stanley Park in Vancouver--but all the animals there beg from people. I finally drew the line at the raccoon that walked up to me and told me he wanted some of my trail mix.
