The hell.

I already put this on facebook but lj and dw have not been completely forsaken for the pleasure of having one's data aggegated and sold:

Young autistic man is held in solitary for 11 days without bail for looking scary; now he is in a mental hospital being "treated" for reacting like an autistic person to traumatic change. His mom is trying to get the story out because the family needs help getting the kid back home.

What can I even add to this? [personal profile] unusualmusic has a rant very much worth reading. Myself, I keep hearing in my head the refrain, "And this will stay with you until you die." His mother reports that Neli is unable to speak at this point.

There'll be a shitstorm and somebody is going to say something very very stupid. They probably already have; I don't read comments on news stories. But someone who actually has the ear of the press is going to say something stupid. It will probably happen more than once. When they do, picture a kid sitting in the grass waiting for the library to open.

Feel free to comment either here or there.

oh shit. I don't know what to say.

I guess I find it un-surprising that a young black man could call become the object of a panic just by walking, sitting, and existing. But actually I find myself shocked by his being held for so long. Dunno why that part surprises me. Unrealistic ideas in my head from TV shows, maybe?

I know. And it's appalling that it is not surprising that a young black man was the center of police attention just for being black.

And that if anything helps this family, it will be that he's autistic, not that he was reported for being black and therefore suspicious.

Not that we know that was why he was reported, but I think we do know it.
