Yeah not so sure I'm going to read out tonight. My back hurts, especially when I stand up, and I'm just not quite up for it. Not sure how to remedy this; partially I am unsure whether I could be shooed away by bored cops for selling poetry without a license. I know lots of buskers do what they do without being molested, but people also do their "garage" sales on the public sidewalks without interference. I was unlucky the one time I tried that, and I find encounters with cops to be somewhat, um, 'restimulating', as Nan would say. That is, I start going all flashback-like to authoritarian church stuff.

Hm. Maybe I should go back to open mics sometime very soon. No busking money, but I could take books to sell and nobody could tell me I had to move along. Well, some open mics are very strict about the five-minute policy, but they're usually nice about it at least.

i think the open mic option sounds safer, if nothing else! and maybe you'd sell some books, for sure. hope your back feels better soon, erik.

Thanks, Vicki. Sometimes it doesn't hurt at all but other times I barely have time to wash my bowl before I have to lean on the sink to relieve the pain. I'm pretty sure this is going to continue on and off for the rest of my life, but I am hoping it doesn't get worse, at least.

this morning at la madeleine, i read the letter to patti smith while drinking decaf and was blown away by it. there was one two-line stanza that stopped me cold and made me reread it a few times. later on, i'll tell you which one, if you're interested, but i'm too lazy to go get the book from the car right now! *lazy daisy is lazy*

Oh yes I am interested! I do wonder what my writing looks like from outside. Very difficult to get an objective view on your own stuff. I suspect you know what I mean. :)

I don't blame you for being lazy. It's probably hot out there besides, isn't it? It's actually going to be hot here today. We decided to join the rest of the country. The fog has blown way back out to sea, so we're getting desert air. Hear me suffer!

yes, i do know. when i send my poems to my pen pal in texas, and he writes back that mine are the strongest he's read lately, i feel so validated! after i've read one over too many times, it becomes almost gibberish to me.

it's gorgeous out there, actually, around 75 degrees and cloudy/overcast. i love it. i'm just lazy. :D

here's the section i meant:

"how to find words for how words found me in notes of mercurial affect run rampant out of buzzing cabinets."

wow, just wow.

Yeah I read mine and every now and again I think yeah that's pretty good I guess and then it just fades back into a kind of variable monotone. I mean I've read these things to myself probably hundreds of times at this point. No objectivity possible here.

You like that line, eh? That's good to know. I was trying to describe what happens when you sing through your guitar amp. Um, with passion. :)

really? huh. i had no idea what exactly it meant, but the language of it is thrilling.
Aug. 25th, 2010 11:35 am (UTC)
oh, i meant to tell you that, in that same poem, i admired the way the language accelerated and became more disjoint after the seconds and fifths and sevenths. very effective.

did you send her a book?

I'm glad you liked it! I compose mostly by instinct but when something isn't working I go back and redo it until it does. I just can't always explain what it is I am doing or why, but it's good to know that one turned out well.

If I knew where to send a book so that it would actually reach her, I would. But I haven't really looked into the possibility of finding out through some of my old music biz contacts. I have, like, one, but they might know someone who knows someone..
