falling apart house

it's been a slow couple of days here in the tiny room in the small apartment in the little city. but this morning at 4am a shelving unit in the back room fell off the wall and woke us all up. fortunately no cats were visiting the facilities at the time or they would have been squished by cans of paint and spare phones and light bulbs. daylight inspection revealed that the shelves, basically a largish homemade plywood box, had been held up by four nails.

as c said, the mystery isn't why they fell but why they didn't fall.

to do: nail box back together and attach to wall with several hundred goodly-length wood screws.

first though I have to figure out why my audio-recording software is acting up. and then to flesh out the bass line that is becoming interesting at the rate of one measure per day. it would probably go quicker if I actually knew anything about music but as is my choices after the first note are pretty much unlimited which makes it all the more difficult.

geek rant

so I'm thinking the problem with Deck (that would be the recording software) is that it hasn't really been successfully carbonized (that would be made compatible with OS X). it only occured to me in the last half hour to try running it under 9.2 on the laptop (this requires rebooting which is a pain) and what do you know but all the problems disappear. every single one.

now I don't know if this is Apple's fault for doing weird things to their OS or if it is BIAS' fault for claiming their software is fully operational under OS X when it really isn't or if it is the fault of the free market for not buying more macs and making it profitable for companies actually to put some work into OS X products but I'm annoyed. I did buy Deck with an academic discount but it still wasn't cheap and one of the reasons I went for it over Cubase is that the single version would run under either OS making it easy to switch from desktop to laptop and back again.

if I have to boot into 9.2 everytime I want to use it on my laptop I will be very annoyed.

I wonder if tech support will ever get back to me.

then again

on the bright side, I'm about happy with the bass line and almost able to play it smoothly. will post mp3 eventually but right now I'm too annoyed with Deck to fire it up for a rough mix.

good god shut him up

see the thing is I like OS X. it's dark and mysterious at its core which is both frustrating and alluring but mostly alluring like an unread O'Reilly book and it is more stable than anyone I've ever known and it looks nice although if they introduce the brushed metal in 10.3 it won't anymore and networking it is a breeze and I've got a bunch of apps for it that work very smoothly (all except one..) and even if one crashes it doesn't take down the whole machine and there aren't a billion extensions to turn on and off everytime something goes wrong and and and
