day one

up. any minute now I will start putting my laundry together, quietly as I can so as not to wake anyone. it is still dark out. I guess it is still winter. not that you could tell from the weather. although it might rain tomorrow the past couple of days have been sunny and almost warm in a slightly ridiculous way for january. if this is a result of global warning I might have to move to anchorage or something to get the cold weather I really need every year.

iceland perhaps would be a better choice.

what if greenland actually turns green?

the sad thing is that even getting up this early to do laundry won't put my eta much before noon. I hate laundry. hate hate hate.

good morning!

hints from heloise

well. can I just say thanks to aimgrrrl for passing on the Safety Pin Your Socks Together hint. I swear it saved me an hour in laundry-doing time not having to pair my cache of socks which as we know is near the legal limit of how many pairs of socks a person is allowed to own in the US. if you pin your socks together when you take them off at night they stay paired through the whole process so that you just pick them up and fold them together when they come out of the dryer.

thus I have the entire day in front of me to freak out in. aaagggghhhh. begin now.

airing the wash

jinx points out that I have posted four times in a row about doing laundry. all I can say in my defense is that my laundry is a really big deal because I own so many socks that I only do it a few times a year and it's this huge production with backpacks and duffel bags and special detergent for the silk underwear--if it helps, I won't write about it again for six weeks or more.

I must get to that syllabus but first I will describe for you how eerie it is to have the BART train stop in the middle the tunnel and all the lights go out save one or two by each door and total silence except for distant rumbles and what I suppose were slamming switches so I don't know if everyone lost power or just us but there we sat, nervously laughing. the operator kept saying she would pass on further information about why we were "holding" when she got it but she never did tell us what the problem was. after about ten minutes the train powered back up and off we went.

I kept thinking how much air is in this car and will we have the presence of mind to open the doors before we suffocate. the fans were off. everything dead still.

yeah. that's my story for the week.

too much sock folding

oh and I seem to have repetitive-stressedly injured my elbow, which cries out in pain if I lift anything weighing more than an ounce. this makes picking up briefcases and even pieces of paper rather difficult. that and the sore throat/cough I woke up with this morning have made the beginning of my semester especially bright!

in other news, I did not get paid today.
