the other thing that occured to me was that perhaps the reason some of us have a harder time watching animals suffer than watching humans suffer is not some latent misanthropy but the realization that humans at least have narrative at their disposal with which to take distance from trauma, whereas animals are bound up in the very first gesture of articulation which is that differentiation which creates the possibility of suffering.

these are notes. if none of this makes sense to any of you it's ok because it makes sense to me and one day I will figure out how to say it better.
