  • Mood:

raison d'être

winter camping is planned. five nights in a tent, three nights in a hotel. death valley and mojave preserve.

I wish I could bring one of you with me so that on that first night after ten hours of driving I could show you firsthand the weary thrill of turning back west on the Essex Road into the Providence Mountains one of those small isolated ranges that spill across the Mojave. you'd see the dim thread of the road as it lifts straight up from the desert up the side of the peak and disappears into the shadow of a winter sunset and you get the feeling that in the cold of January there awaits here out in the desert far away from just about everything except the many things that are right out here with you an embrace about the shoulders as though they had been waiting for you for months extended by the borax and the iron and the creosote themselves. I mean I don't know if you'd see all that but I'd like to show it to somebody.
