the horror

sometimes I think I should build myself a cheap windows machine just so I can get to know the OS better. I mean if I'm really thinking of forsaking academia for computers I should know the most popular OS on the market, shouldn't I.

bleh. then I'd have to buy software for it. I mean unless all I wanted to find out was how to get on the internet and network with it. which might be sufficient, come to think of it.

hm. I feel a project coming on. are there any how-to's on building computers from scratch? I know what sorts of parts I need but I don't know how to hook them all up and suspect it would not be immediately obvious if I had them all sitting in a box.
