I'm out

just like in dodge ball (or "battle ball' where they lined us up across the gym, gave each side three to five volleyballs--not those soft red rubber kickballs but volleyballs hard as rocks--and instructed us to hurl them at each other with all our strength. bruises from "battle ball" were proudly worn.) when I was really good at not getting hit, I rarely get tagged on a meme.

but expanding_x_man gets me with this one, unless he knows more than one Erik here, in which case he gets us both:

Five things that make me happy

What are some things that just make you happy and feel good. If I tag you, you write your own five things down and tag five people on your friends list to do the same.

1. Santiago flopping himself down under my arm every night and falling asleep with his head on my chest. best sleeping aid ever.

2. Jackson when he looks at you with that oh you're going to pet me and I'm really going to like it look. I think he only gives me that look of all the people in the world.

3. Making dinner for myself by pouring boiling water in a pouch, eating it, and then snuggling into my sleeping bag in winter in the desert alone. 3b. Listening to the coyotes.

4. Driving for 12 hours knowing there's a hotel room or campsite with my name on it at the end of the road.

5. First cup of coffee every morning.

Do I sound unsocial? Number 6 could be the dinner we always have when I am in Seattle where we invite a number of our oldest, bestest friends, buy lots of beer and wine, and just hang out. Sometimes we go out to Septieme for this but we still buy lots of beer and wine! When that happens somehow we always end up at einfall's apartment which is one of my favorite places to end up at.

Tagyourit: you know what, I'm not going to tag anyone, but anyone who wants to do this, I'd like to read it. this means you.

re: 3a.

i love adventures in any desert, but you are my hero for sleeping in one alone. whenever i've camped in one (okay, pretty much just once, for one week in joshua tree) i didn't sleep at all. 3b kept me up all night thinking i was going to get eaten.

Re: ahhhh!
oh those coyotes are 30-40lbs at best. I suspect they might be a little more difficult to subdue than a dog that size but I've wrestled obstinate rottweilers to the ground.

seriously, though, coyotes don't eat people. they eat people's food, though, so you do want to keep a clean camp unless you want critters poking around. I worry way more about other people than about animals when I'm in the mojave.

camping in grizzly country is a different story.
