if you decided you wanted to do something nice for yourself in the next few hours but really didn't know what and really didn't have lots of money to budget for it, what would you contemplate doing?

in a minute I have to go pay the (late) rent and then I want to know what I should do next. I'm still slightly depressed although I did manage to get a couple of things done today that I'd been putting off for no reason other than the usual It Involves Contacting People.

I'm not yet hungry but I'm sure I will be soon. I need cereal for tomorrow. plus I'm out of snack bars of various sorts. I can't imagine what I might want for dinner though. it might be the cereal I buy!

me? i'd go to a bookstore, paw a bunch of books, buy some chocolate-covered coffee beans or a small latte, sit down and make up stories in a notebook about the people i saw, and then come home again to tell LJ all about it. *g*

hope you think of something cheering!

is that how you fiction writers do it? I never would have thought of trying this. perhaps next time I am in a place with a notebook and pencil I won't write all about what I'm thinking but rather what sorts of things the people around me might be involved with.

bookstores are dangerous dangerous places for me. I really should finish a book one of these days I suppose but so far they are either too hard to get all the way to the end of or too silly to put up with for that long.

but all in all it doesn't sound like a bad idea. the only catch is that borders' cafe, with its free wireless, is usually completely full. it's too bad the used bookstores on valencia don't double as cafes. I wonder why they don't. I wonder if you would be more likely to get your inventory stolen if you sold used books and let people read them in the cafe before paying.

i like used-book stores! but you're right, they don't usually have cafes. hmmm. it really bugs me, in borders and b&n, to see people in chairs or at tables, breaking the spines on beautiful new books and rustling through magazines, when i'm sure they're not always planning to buy them. i get the urge to play old-school librarian and crack them across the knuckles. :D
