cd meme

I'm not sure what the point of this is other than to congratulate yourself for your fine musical taste. I guess amazon probably won't notice the hotlinking but I'm trying to figure out why a table with cd covers would be a good thing to add to my profile on myspace.

oh, i didn't see it as self-congratulation. it was just a fun toy, i thought, and i enjoyed having people leap in and say "groovy, man" or similar.

i don't know a single one of your choices there, but you're worlds hipper than i am!

no I never meant to imply that's what your meme-age was about. really it's all about me: I'm the one who does these things to congratulate myself on my fine taste!

it's so that other obscure music nerds know how underground you are
what!! you listen to xasthur??? ohmygod, i never would have expected that.. but maybe i shouldn't be that surprised, considering all the other weird obscure stuff you're into. nice neutral milk hotel + silver mt zion choices aswell. the only other thing up there that i know about is jesu, but i've never actually heard them. maybe i should look into that, cuz amazon lists them with sun o))) and isis. and maybe i should also check out bohren & der club of gore, since amazon lists them with pelican, explosions in the sky, and red sparrowes (which are all amazing, but you probably know this already). aghhhh, time to clear some room on the hard drive...

dude. i want to trade mix cds with you or something!

Re: it's so that other obscure music nerds know how underground you are
I'd definitely be up for a cd trade. for instance I've heard of the red sparrowes but have not yet bought anything of theirs, or pelican's, and I've never heard of explosions in the sky.

jesu is a little like earth with sort nw sad-boy vocals. none of the cookie monster vocals of so much black metal.

yeah I listen to xasthur! I think I discovered them at the aquarius records website and then, since aquarius is two blocks from my house, went and bought the cd.

I also need me some sun o))) as I haven't gotten around to buying them either.

you should try the baptist generals if you like neutral milk hotel. frog eyes too, perhaps. I've got a few illegal mp3s up on my website if you want to take a listen. it's an unlinked page that I don't tell very many people about but I set it up to get my friends to buy more cd's by bands I like.

Re: it's so that other obscure music nerds know how underground you are
Fuck, sorry this took me so long (it's finals week...)

Pelican
Isis (on the same record label as Pelican and Jesu)
Red Sparrowes
Bright Red Paper (more cool post-rock)
Explosions in the Sky
Do Make Say Think (often mentioned in the same breath as Explosions in the Sky)
Sunn O)))
Lustmord (awesome dark ambient)

(convenient index here)

If you use bittorrent, I could make you a pack with the albums these come from...

Er, those didn't show up as obvious links. In case you think I'm crazy and I just wrote you up a redundant list, you can actually click on the band names ;)

Re: it's so that other obscure music nerds know how underground you are
oh no, they're links. my style sheet makes links a little subtle. thanks!

I might take you up on the bittorrent thing but I've never used it before and wouldn't have time to futz with it till later this evening. but futzing with new technology is always fun.

Re: it's so that other obscure music nerds know how underground you are
I use Azureus to download torrents. It has a built-in torrent creator if you want to make your own, and a lot of other convenient features that you'll appreciate if you do a lot of file sharing. If you decide to get into it, I can give you a list of good places to find post-rock and metal...

Here is the link to the torrent file. It's got one album from every band linked above, except for Pelican and Do Make Say Think which have two (I couldn't decide). The torrent file is about 45KB and the pack is just under 800MB.

If you can't figure out how to make it work, let me know...

Hey dude, just checking to see if you grabbed it yet. There are 4 people seeding it so if you haven't, now would be a good time to hop on... :)

Re: it's so that other obscure music nerds know how underground you are
oops sorry. haven't had time to do this. I will see I can get it going tonight after I teach. I won't have time to mess with it today as I will be too busy freaking out over the fact that I teach this afternoon.

Re: it's so that other obscure music nerds know how underground you are
No problem man, I was just curious to see how you liked it. ;)

The "yousendit" link to the torrent file may have expired, but I can e-mail it to you or something if that's the case.

Have a nice time teaching :)
