I need to go buy a tam before I spend the money on something else like therapy. they're over $100 but I've worked hard for the right to wear one instead of a mortarboard so I'm going to take the plunge.
in the meantime I really should do some more actual dissertation writing. first though I have to get some email out to my students.
no call back yet from the chief so I still don't know what she has to say to me. my aunt donna called last night after I was asleep and I don't know what she has to say to me either. she said she had a couple of questions. at least it didn't sound urgent so I know that grandma is still ok. I have to remember to ask her for grandma's new address in federal way since they moved her back from the ocean. it's weird not to have grandma elsie at ocean shores. she'd been there a good thirty-five years--so long that I only have vague memories of the house in yelm where she and grandpa milo had lived before. I'll probably still drive out to the ocean from time to time. just to reflect on how old we are all getting.
I often think of time passing in terms of celebrities. like is kurt cobain the jim morrison of the generation in high school now? whom do they see as their frank sinatra and sammy davis jr? how long before the awful shoes that diesel makes now are retro? is world war II as long ago as the civil war was to me? the internet must be the microwave oven for twentysomethings.
and soon we will have completely forgotten what it was like to have to share world power with another country. of course that is already turning out tragically. dear europe: get your shit together and develop a credible resistance to the US!
is this the sort of thing I should be writing in my new "commercial" blog? the one I haven't coded yet?
