vacation. sort of.

note to those who might find this notable:

I will be in seattle aug 13-22. it might turn out to be something of a working vacation but I badly badly need to get out of town and I must go visit grandma who will be 96 if she makes it to october. she said she'd live long enough to see me get my phd. I won't officially get it till december if I file between now and then. but still I'm getting a little worried. she's actually in decent health, but at this age anything can just stop working.

That's great you're going to see your grandma! Good for you. Get some stories out of her, old people know so much about the past, since they lived it. We don't value that enough, but - it certainly is always interesting.

That's a great idea- (to see her).

oh I always go see her while I am there. she used to be out at the ocean, which was a bit of a drive for my aunt and me, but now she's in federal way which is near sea-tac airport--about twenty minutes from lisagail's house, where I will be staying.

she has always been 100% behind everything about me. she is legally blind and often mistakes me for my father when we are just standing around not saying anything although I haven't seen her with the bald pate yet. she sees light but can't make out details. the bright white head might throw her off.

it is really a shame that she is getting very old. the world needs more like her. she was born in the beginning of the twentieth century with a twentyfirst century outlook!

ooh, is she a storytelling type? grab a recorder and get her to tell you her life story.

So, I've missed getting to see you the last few times you were up. We should definitely make it a point this time. Beers n dinner at Columbia City Alehouse or something, maybe? If you're lucky, Donna will be having one of her famous barbeques that weekend, and that'd just be fun. Aidan and crew always show, and a bunch of other folks that I'm quite sure you know, and Lisagail and anyone else would be more than welcome. It's pretty much an "everybody show up" event.

I hope you have a great vacation up there, and that you can show your grandma that piece of paper that says "Erik, Ph.D.". Will you be able to see her at Christmas, so you can show it to her then? Anyway, you have the Ph.D. already... the piece of paper is only a formality. :)

96, wow, that's a long life!
